Maintaining data in Microsoft Windows Server ecosystems continues to be a reality for many organizations across the globe. For a variety of reasons, more organizations than you might think have long term strategic plans to continue to engage File Servers and technology that emulates them on-prem and in the cloud for data storage, usage, and management. For these organizations, this is where the data lives!

Now that that’s settled, how do we leverage it?

Secure, Remote Data Access and Sharing

In today’s organizations, working remotely has become the norm. And while working outside of the office can provide flexibility and convenience to the remote worker, it can be challenging to IT workers tasked with enabling and supporting these remote workers who need to perform their jobs in a secure manner.

Addressing the need for these workers to access and share files stored on an organizations’ on-site servers can be particularly problematic, with organizations and users coming up with all kinds of less secure, quick fix remedies. It’s why Condrey Corporation developed a secure identity-driven solution to remote data access and sharing that is both easy to use and administer.

Using any supported web browser, Aurora users can log in from their workstation, laptop, or mobile device over a secure web connection. After establishing Microsoft Active Directory authentication, Aurora matches a user’s unique identity to their approved network storage areas. It then displays the user’s NTFS file shares, including home folder and any authorized group share folders, via an intuitive, easy-to-use web interface that provides simple, Windows Explorer-like navigation of the displayed folders. Aurora also enables users to share files within this storage area with those in other organizations through the online access portal.

Direct Remote Access to Files and Folders

When it comes to remote access to Windows Server stored files, there’s a logical remedy, and then there are all kinds of rigged workarounds. The logical approach is to provide users direct secure access to the actual files located on the company servers. A rigged workaround might be a proxy-based configuration, storing copies of the files in OneDrive, or even having the user email themselves copies of the files. But when it comes to security and version control, a rigged workaround is a substandard solution.

Identity Must Determine What Can be Accessed Remotely

When an employee is in the office and needs to access files stored on the server, he or she must first authenticate to Microsoft Active Directory and is then granted access to all network folders where he or she has access permissions. For remote access to these same network folders, the authentication process granting access via Active Directory must be the same.

Ease of Use is Imperative

If a remote access configuration is not easy for a user to work with, requires extensive training, or requires technical support, productivity for the remote user, as well as the organization, is hampered. Furthermore, when remote users feel that a configuration is too difficult to use, they oftentimes tend to invoke less secure but more familiar methods for accessing files remotely including putting files in Dropbox, OneDrive, or even emailing themselves the files.

Provides Direct Remote Access to Files and Folders

The remote file access solution from Condrey Corporation provides your remote users direct access to files and folders stored on your organization’s local network file system. This direct access differs greatly from proxy-based configured remote access solutions that enable access to files that have been copied up to a web server.

Identity-Based Authentication and Access

Once a user authenticates to Active Directory, the Condrey Corporation remote file access solution uses the user’s identity to determine all of the storage areas to which the user is entitled access. This method of determining access is much more efficient and accurate than relying on network login scripts and drive mappings. The solution then mounts all of the user home folder and group shares to which the user has access permissions.

Intuitive User Interface

A web browser provides an intuitive interface that looks and functions similar to Windows File Explorer. With a direct connection to the servers where the files are stored, the interface lets your users download and upload files and folders as well as perform other management tasks including renaming files and folders, creating new folders, and copying files.
